Wondering how much a wedding videographer will cost? You’re not alone. That question is queried in search engines roughly 1,000 times per month. So let’s talk about it.

In this article:

  • Who qualifies as a “wedding videographer”
  • Average cost (nationally) for a professional wedding videographer
  • A word for those on the fence about hiring a wedding videographer

#1 — What is a wedding videographer?

Technically speaking, you could hire anyone who’s willing to film your wedding for whatever price you’re willing to pay. When my wife and I first started filming weddings, we accepted several offers that were less than $500. For us, the most important thing was to build our portfolio. We knew that if we gave people more than what they paid for, that eventually others would be willing to pay us what we’re worth.

So let’s talk about your options for wedding videography:

  • Hire an non-professional: If you simply cannot come up with the resources to hire a professional wedding videographer, then by all means, use what resources you do have and find someone who will film your wedding. I don’t care if you go to Target and purchase the cheapest camera you find, give it to your 13-year old cousin and have him/her film your wedding. Wedding videography is a must.
  • Hire the cheapest wedding videographer you can find: Let me start by saying this; there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being on a budget. But sometimes it’s not that money is an issue, but rather a certain mentality that prevents couples from being more intentional with their wedding videographer selection. Wedding industry or not, I’m sure we can all relate to the thought, “oh it’s not that important, I’ll just have so-and-so do it.” But let’s talk about that.

Of all the things that you’re going to purchase for your wedding, which of them will last the longest? Your photos and your video(s). When the music fades, and the flowers wither, and you’ve eaten the last piece of your frozen wedding cake, what will you have left to show your children, 10, 20, 30 years down the road?

Photos are great, we can’t live without them! But they serve a completely different purpose than videos. Photos capture moments, videos tell stories.

So perhaps it’s time to reconsider the role that video will play in your wedding. I’ll tell you this, and I’m in good company when I say this, I wish I would have given more thought to the importance of having a wedding videographer at my wedding. Many other couples simply wish  that had spent more time and money on their wedding videographer.

  • Hire a professional wedding vidoegrapher: A professional videographer is going to capture all those special moments that you’d never want to forget. And since by nature, we do forget things, hiring a professional videographer will at least allow you to relive those special moments day after day, for the rest of your life.
